Leif Cocks Returns from Visiting Bukit Tigapuluh

"We have released over 150 orangutans into the ecosystem.."

I have just come back from Bukit Tigapuluh, Sumatra where I spent time working with our Wildlife Protection Units on patrol.

Dear Supporters,

I have just come back from Bukit Tigapuluh, Sumatra where I spent time working with our Wildlife Protection Units on patrol.

During this time we were reintroduced to a young male orangutan named ‘Rocky’. There have been over 150 orangutans released into the Bukit Tigapuluh ecosystem, so we are well on the way to re-establishing the orangutan population that was previously extinct before we started with our patrols.

I also had the opportunity to catch up with ‘Miriam’, one of our TOP Adopted Orphans. It was great to see her progress at forest school and see Miriam gaining the skills that her mother, if she was still alive, would have been able to teach her. Miriam was born in Bukit Tigapuluh in May 2007.

Her mother ‘Mena’ was one of the six repatriated orangutans from Malaysia in 2005. Tragically, Mena died in early September 2007 of a mystery illness just a few months after Miriam’s birth.

Miriam is an active orangutan with a bold personality, but if she wants something and doesn't get it she will often cry. Miriam is a kind orangutan. She will never fight back or disturb other orangutans. She will share her food with her friends. She also likes to hang in the cage and prefers playing on the rope to playing with other toys such as drums, hammocks etc. The one drawback for Miriam is that she is very close to her keeper and will often try to hold hands with the staff who are working near her cage.

Miriam is currently housed in a temporary cage at the Jambi office. The plan is to transport Miriam and her friends to the reintroduction station in Lubuk Kambing-Danau Alo.

If you want to help Miriam continue her journey back into the wild, adopt her here.

Thank you all for your ongoing support!

Founder and President
